Cantigas de amor e amigo: Martín Codax against Fernando Pessoa

Music, poetry and dance of  Medieval Iberia between the XIth and XVth century.

This performance will be a dialogue between medieval portuguese poetry, cantigas de amor y amigo (genre of medieval lyric poetry, apparently rooted in a female-voiced song tradition native to the northwest quadrant of the Iberian Peninsula), some poems of Fernando Pessoa, music, and dance.

Listening to poetry, instead of reading it, was natural for centuries, and until the Middle Ages, in our culture, there was no difference in concept between poetry and music.

Bringing together words and music with stageing is something that is relatively frequent in some countries. Which has come to be called spoken word, since poets experimented with ways of bringing their poems to the stage, hybridizing genres, accompanying texts with instruments, performances, and dance.

This is an invitation to enjoy and get excited together, to live the collective experience of poetry, and recover its old power with new meanings. This show pays tribute to the movement of the body in dance and the senses.

Cristiane Azem will be reciting the poems and dancing and Eduardo Paniagua will play salterio, flute and frame drum.
